AROUND THE SPIT

Experience beautiful Homer, Alaska through the many activities and entertainment options available in Homer and on The Spit! One of the best parts about working with our guests is the opportunity to share the place we love with so many new people. We understand that the time you spend in our campground is just a fraction of the time you'll spend in Homer and want to help you make memories that will last a lifetime. Below you'll find a sample of recommendations.

Annual Events

Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival - Where birds flock, birders follow! Get more info HERE on this fest that unofficially kicks off summer here in Homer.

Act like a local! Head to the Homer's Farmers Market for fresh produce, crafts, food and entertainment. Interested? Check out their current schedule HERE.

Spending the 4th with us? The annual parade is a great attraction for kids and adults alike. Insider tip: stake out a spot next to the Bay Reality building on Pioneer to watch the paraders perform skits and dances for the judges!

Homer Yacht Club's Land's End Regatta takes place at the End of June. Sail into town to watch the excitement. You'll find more details HERE.

Got a green thumb? Wish you did? Enjoy the uniqueness of Alaskan gardening during the Homer Gardener's Weekend. Check out the Homer Garden Club's website for more information.

Fishing

Though it's most well known as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World", Homer presents many fishing opportunities. Cast a line for salmon at the Fishing Hole or off the end of the spit by Land's End! Both are walking distance to the campground. Don't have a pole? Not to worry, we have some for sale!

Fishing Charters are also available out of the Homer Harbor for those who want to go halibut or salmon fishing off shore but don't want to worry about bringing their own boats and poles. There are many companies within walking distance of our campground. We highly recommend North Country Charters as a fellow family-run business with 35+ years in the business. Wildlife TOURS

Check out one of the many sightseeing or wildlife tours that leave from right here in Homer. Fly-in bear viewing, kayak trips across the bay, whale watching and Scenic tours of the bay are just a few of the many available excursions. Book in advance or walk the boardwalks and browse through their offices to find the perfect trip for your group!

Food

Homer's restaurants are some of the best in Alaska. You'll find a wide variety of cuisines on the spit and in town.. Here is a list of a few of our favorites: Captain Patties or Little Mermaid are fantastic places to get fresh seafood dishes on the spit. Finn's Pizza on the boardwalk has wood oven pizza with fun toppings like pears or you can stick to the classics. Head to Two Sister's Bakery on Old Town for sweet treats in the morning or delicious dinners in the evening. Or catch Hobo Jim, Alaska's official balladeer, at AJ's Old Town Steakhouse for an unforgettable Alaskan dinner.

Fun For Kids

Looking for something fun to do with your little ones? Homer has lots of options.

The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies is a great place to go with kids for fun (and educational!) activities. Visit their website to learn more about all that they offer, including tide pooling, guided hike/walks, harbor life tours and even trips across the bay!

Other great spots to take kids include the Wildlife viewing platforms by the Homer Airport and at the end of the Spit, the Islands and Oceans Visitors Center, or the Pratt Museum.

Homer also has a nice Public Library, a Skate Park, and the Karen Hornaday Park/Playground keeps the kids occupied all day, for FREE!

SITES & ATTRACTIONS

The number one attraction in Homer is the spit. Most visitors make their way to the Spit for at least some time during their stay. The beach, gifts shops, chartered expedition options and restaurants are worth a days exploration at least, but there is so much more to Homer.

Let the Homer Trolley take you around on their hop on/off tour around the spit and downtown (one of the stops is right by our front office!).

Take a self guided drive to one of Homer's scenic drives.

Baycrest Lookout - You will pass this on your way into and out of town if you're driving.
Skyline drive - Access this hilltop view point from East or West Hill

Explore Old Town and Pioneer Avenue. Homer is a town teeming with talented artists. The galleries and shops in downtown Homer are fabulously curated places to find the perfect Alaskan gift for a friend or yourself! It helps that there are many delicious restaurants peppered along the walk for when you get hungry.

If you love art you may also love our community theater! A summer without taking in a play at Pier One Theater would be incomplete. Our neighbors work hard to write, direct and act in quality, hilarious, thought provoking and diverse plays for both adults and children. Local Breweries

Homer Brewing Company - On a sunny day there is nothing better than a cold beer and some Jakolof Bay Oysters on the patio.
Grace Ridge Brewing - Home brewers turned entrepreneurs, head to down Ocean Drive and check out whats happening at Homer's newest brewery.

Bear Creek Winery - Beautiful scenery and Delicious wines. Bear Creek's tasting room is definitely worth a visit for the wine lovers in your crew. And you can take a bottle (or a case!) of your favorite home with you.

Want to "Hit the Town"?

Salty Dawg Saloon - This world famous, Homer landmark is the place to go on the spit for fisherman coming home from a hard days work and for visitors to relax after a jam packed day of adventure. You can't leave Homer without getting a beer and leaving a dollar on the wall at the Dawg.
Alice's Champagne Palace - People of all ages and walks of life enjoy live music, dancing, trivia, food and, yes, drinks and this downtown hangout.
Kharacters Alaskan Bar - The slogan on the door, "Kharacters, come in and meet some" truly speaks to this bar's atmosphere. In Kharacters at any given time you'll find a motley crew of locals, getting rowdy, playing pool or just enjoying a drink at the bar with an old friend.

Across the Bay

If you have visited Homer before and not made it across Kachemak Bay you are missing out! Just a short water taxi ride across the water will bring you to new beaches, fun hikes, one of a kind learning opportunities, and unique overnight accommodations. There are many boat companies with offices just a short walk from the campground.

One particularly special trip is a tour to Halibut Cove on the Danny J followed by a meal at The Saltry. Check out their website HERE or visit their reservations office on the boardwalk near our campground.
